About the DAF 46
The DAF 46 was the final passenger car to carry the DAF name before the brand's automotive division was fully absorbed by Volvo. Introduced in 1974 as a successor to the 44, it retained the Giovanni Michelotti-designed bodywork but introduced significant mechanical changes, most notably a de Dion rear axle for improved handling. It was unique for using a simplified 'single-belt' version of the Variomatic transmission, which offered smoother operation but lacked the redundancy of earlier twin-belt systems. While slow by contemporary standards, its ease of use and quirky engineering have earned it a dedicated following among microcar and classic enthusiasts.

DAF 46 fun facts
- The DAF 46 is famous for being able to drive as fast in reverse as it can forwards, thanks to the unique way the Variomatic transmission operates.
- Unlike its predecessors, the 46 used a single drive belt instead of two; DAF claimed improved belt quality made the second 'limp-home' belt unnecessary.
- Because of their high reverse speeds, DAFs were eventually banned from competing against other cars in the Dutch 'Achteruitrijden' (backwards driving) championships.
