About the DAF 600
The DAF 600 was a revolutionary milestone in automotive engineering, debuting the 'Variomatic' belt-driven CVT. Developed by Hub van Doorne, this system allowed for stepless acceleration and made the car remarkably easy to drive, earning it a loyal following in the Netherlands. Its air-cooled flat-twin engine was simple and efficient, though the car's modest performance and 'easy-drive' image eventually led to a somewhat staid reputation. Today, it is celebrated as a pioneer of modern transmission technology and a charming icon of Dutch industrial history.

DAF 600 fun facts
- The Variomatic transmission allows the DAF 600 to drive backwards just as fast as it can drive forwards, a quirk that led to the creation of 'reverse racing' events.
- The car's unique transmission design meant it lacked a traditional differential; instead, two separate belts drove each rear wheel independently.
- At its 1958 Amsterdam Motor Show debut, DAF received over 4,000 orders before the car was even ready for full production.
