About the DAF 33
The DAF 33 was the final evolution of the 'A-body' series that began with the 600, serving as the entry-point to the Dutch brand's range. It is most famous for its Variomatic transmission, a belt-driven CVT that allowed the car to drive as fast in reverse as it could forward. The 1972 model year marked a significant technical update with the switch from a 6-volt to a 12-volt electrical system. While modest in performance, its simplicity and ease of use made it a cult classic in the Netherlands and a pioneer of automatic small cars.

DAF 33 fun facts
- The Variomatic transmission uses centrifugal weights and vacuum to adjust belt pulleys, providing a seamless range of ratios without traditional gears.
- Because of its unique drivetrain, the DAF 33 could theoretically reach its top speed of 112 km/h in reverse, though this was rarely recommended.
- The 33 was so popular with the Dutch postal service (PTT) that specialized van and pick-up versions were produced alongside the sedan.
