About the BMW X5 E53
The E53 BMW X5 was a landmark vehicle that effectively launched the premium 'Sports Activity Vehicle' segment, prioritising on-road dynamics over traditional off-road utility. Developed during BMW's ownership of Land Rover, it utilised a car-like monocoque chassis and shared significant electronic and suspension architecture with the E39 5 Series. The 2004 facelift introduced the more powerful 218hp M57 diesel engine and the intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which could vary torque between axles in milliseconds. For collectors, the Sport trim is the most desirable diesel variant, offering a firmer suspension setup and more aggressive styling that still feels contemporary.
