About the BMW 328

The BMW 328 is widely regarded as the most successful European sports car of the late 1930s, famously winning the 1940 Mille Miglia. Engineered by Fritz Fiedler, it prioritised lightweight construction and aerodynamic efficiency over raw power, featuring a tubular steel frame and a sophisticated hemispherical cylinder head. Its 2.0-litre straight-six engine, fed by three Solex carburetors, delivered a level of refinement and agility that was decades ahead of its time. For collectors, the 328 represents the genesis of BMW's 'Ultimate Driving Machine' philosophy and remains highly eligible for prestigious historic events like the Goodwood Revival.

BMW 328 fun facts

  • The 328's engine design was so effective that it was taken by the British after WWII to form the basis of the Bristol 400 and subsequent Bristol-powered cars.
  • In 2004, the 328 became the first car to win both the original Mille Miglia (1940) and the modern Mille Miglia Storica revival.
  • The car's signature vertical 'kidney' grilles were designed to be tall and slim to improve cooling for the high-revving straight-six.
