About the Vauxhall Astra E
The second-generation Vauxhall Astra, known internally as the Astra E, was a revolutionary step forward for the brand, trading the boxy lines of its predecessor for a wind-tunnel-honed 'teardrop' shape. This aerodynamic focus resulted in a class-leading drag coefficient of 0.32, significantly improving fuel efficiency and high-speed stability. The Merit trim served as the popular entry-level specification, offering a balance of affordability and the robust 1.6-litre Family II engine. While the GTE grabbed the headlines, the standard hatchbacks like the Merit were the backbone of Vauxhall's sales success, helping the company briefly overtake Austin Rover in the UK market. Today, surviving examples are increasingly rare, valued by collectors for their clean 1980s aesthetic and historical significance as a 1985 European Car of the Year winner.
