About the Toyota Crown S40
The S40 generation Toyota Crown represented a significant leap forward for the brand, moving away from the utilitarian roots of the original RS series toward a more sophisticated, international design. Heavily influenced by American styling trends of the early 1960s, particularly the Ford Falcon, it featured a wider, lower stance and a distinctive 'crystal pillar' design on later models. It was the first Crown to be designed entirely in-house by Toyota and served as the company's primary export model to the United States and Europe. While the 1.9-litre 3R engine was a carryover from the previous generation, the S40's refined chassis and increased dimensions established the Crown as Japan's premier executive saloon.
