About the Subaru Rex KM1
The second-generation Subaru Rex, introduced in 1981, marked a radical departure for the model by switching from a rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout to a modern front-engine, front-wheel-drive configuration. This change, which Subaru famously claimed left only 'two connecting rods and an ashtray' from the predecessor, significantly improved interior space and packaging. Powered by the EK23 two-cylinder engine, it remained a staple of the Japanese kei car class while also finding success in export markets as the Mini Jumbo or Sherpa. Its lightweight chassis and independent suspension provided nimble handling, eventually serving as the mechanical foundation for the larger Subaru Justy.
