About the Subaru Rex K21
Launched in 1972 to replace the R-2, the Subaru Rex (K21) was a significant departure in styling, adopting a modern 'wedge' look inspired by the larger Leone. Despite the new body, it initially retained the rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and the water-cooled two-stroke engine from its predecessor. The K21 was designed to meet strict Japanese kei car regulations, offering surprising interior space and a rear luggage compartment. It remains a cult classic in Japan, representing the final era of rear-engined Subaru microcars before the transition to front-wheel drive in the 1980s.
