About the SsangYong Istana

Launched in 1995, the SsangYong Istana was the result of a deep technical partnership with Mercedes-Benz, essentially serving as a licensed version of the MB100. Its name, meaning 'palace' in Malay, reflected SsangYong's ambition to provide a more refined and spacious experience than its domestic rivals. Unusually for a cab-over van of this era, it utilised a front-wheel-drive layout with a longitudinal engine, a configuration inherited directly from its Mercedes progenitor. Powered by the robust OM662 five-cylinder diesel engine, it earned a reputation for bulletproof reliability, becoming a ubiquitous sight as a school bus and shuttle across South East Asia.
