About the Smart ForFour W454
The first-generation Smart ForFour (W454) was a radical departure for the brand, moving away from the rear-engine layout of the Fortwo to a front-engine platform shared with the Mitsubishi Colt. Built at the NedCar plant in the Netherlands, it featured Smart's signature interchangeable plastic body panels and a visible Tridion safety cell. The 1.1-litre three-cylinder engine provides a characterful thrum, though the car was often criticised for its high price relative to its Japanese sibling. Despite its clever interior with sliding rear seats, slow sales led to production being cut short after only two years.
