About the Riley RM

Introduced in August 1945, the Riley RMA was the first of the celebrated RM series and one of the first new British cars to emerge after World War II. It utilised a modified version of the pre-war 12/4 'Big Four' engine, featuring twin camshafts mounted high in the block and hemispherical combustion chambers. The RMA is distinguished by its traditional ash-framed body, fabric-covered roof, and a dark blue radiator badge. It was technically advanced for its time, featuring independent front suspension with torsion bars and rack-and-pinion steering, providing road manners that were superior to many of its contemporaries.

Riley RM fun facts

  • The RMA's roof is covered in a leather-effect fabric because the large steel presses required for a full metal roof were unavailable in post-war Britain.
  • Early RMA models featured a split opening windscreen, a charming pre-war carryover that was phased out in later production years.
  • The Riley RM series was the last to be developed by Riley as an independent company before it was fully absorbed into the Nuffield Organisation and later BMC.
