About the Austin FX3
The Austin FX3 was the first all-new London taxi design following World War II, developed by Austin in partnership with Mann & Overton and Carbodies. While early models used a petrol engine, the 1954 introduction of the 2.2-litre diesel engine proved revolutionary for fuel economy in urban stop-start traffic. It featured a unique three-door configuration, with an open luggage platform next to the driver instead of a front passenger seat. Its robust mechanicals and 'Higham' jack system made it a dependable workhorse until it was succeeded by the ubiquitous FX4.
