About the Riley Pathfinder
The Riley Pathfinder was the final model to use the famous 'Big Four' engine, a twin-camshaft unit with hemispherical combustion chambers that traced its lineage back to the 1930s. Designed by Gerald Palmer, it featured a sophisticated chassis with coil-spring rear suspension and a sleek, aerodynamic body that was shared with the Wolseley 6/90. Despite its performance, the model was plagued by early reliability issues with its rear suspension, earning it the unfortunate nickname 'Ditchfinder'. Today, it is prized by enthusiasts as the last authentic Riley before the brand was fully absorbed into BMC's badge-engineering strategy.

Riley Pathfinder fun facts
- The Pathfinder's gear lever is unusually located on the floor to the right-hand side of the driver's seat, a layout intended to allow for a three-passenger front bench seat.
- Early models used a complex rear suspension system with a Panhard rod that was prone to failure if not maintained, leading to its 'Ditchfinder' reputation.
- The 2.5-litre engine featured twin camshafts mounted high in the block, operating short pushrods to the valves in a cross-flow head.
