About the SEAT Malaga
Launched in 1985, the SEAT Malaga was a critical model for the Spanish brand as it transitioned into an independent manufacturer following its split from Fiat. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the Malaga was essentially a three-box saloon version of the Ibiza and Ronda, sharing their 'System Porsche' engines developed to modernise SEAT's image. While it shared underpinnings with the Fiat Ritmo-based Ronda, it was developed separately from its Italian cousin, the Fiat Regata. It offered a cavernous 515-litre boot and respectable performance for its class, though it struggled to compete with more refined rivals in export markets.

SEAT Malaga fun facts
- The engine was branded 'System Porsche' because SEAT paid the German firm 7 Deutsche Marks per car to use the name for marketing credibility.
- In Greece, the car was renamed the SEAT Gredos because 'Malaga' sounded too similar to a common Greek swear word.
- Despite its budget positioning, the Malaga featured flush-fitting door handles, a design detail that Fiat only added to the rival Regata later in its life.
