About the Pontiac Catalina
The 1972 Pontiac Catalina represents the fifth generation of Pontiac's entry-level full-size offering, built on the GM B-body platform. This model year is significant for the industry-wide shift from gross to net horsepower ratings, which saw the 400 cubic-inch (6.6L) V8's output appear to drop significantly despite few mechanical changes. It features the distinctive 'V' nose grille and wrap-around cockpit interior inspired by the Grand Prix. While less performance-oriented than its 1960s predecessors, it remains a quintessential example of the American 'land yacht' era, prized for its smooth ride and robust V8 torque.
