About the Pontiac Catalina
The 1959 Catalina marked a pivotal moment for Pontiac, introducing the 'Wide-Track' chassis design which pushed the wheels further apart to improve handling and stability. It featured the debut of the legendary 389 cubic-inch V8 engine, a powerplant that would become the backbone of Pontiac performance for a decade. The styling was radical for the era, featuring a split-grille design and 'flat-top' rooflines on four-door models. As the entry-level full-size Pontiac, it offered a lighter, more performance-oriented platform than the heavier Star Chief or Bonneville.
