About the Plymouth Valiant
The first-generation Plymouth Valiant was Chrysler's bold entry into the emerging 1960s compact market, distinguished by its avant-garde 'plucked chicken' styling and unit-body construction. At its heart was the legendary 170 cubic-inch (2.8-litre) Slant-6 engine, canted at 30 degrees to allow for a lower hood line and more efficient intake manifolding. This engine earned a reputation for near-indestructibility, helping the Valiant become a massive sales success that provided vital financial stability for Chrysler. While its looks were polarising, its torsion-bar front suspension offered handling that was widely considered superior to its contemporary rivals from Ford and Chevrolet.
