About the Fiat 125
Introduced in 1967 as an interim model, the Fiat 125 was a masterclass in parts-bin engineering by Dante Giacosa, combining a modified Fiat 1500 chassis with a lengthened 124 body. The 125 Special, launched in 1968, elevated the package with a 100 hp version of Aurelio Lampredi’s famous twin-cam engine and a rare-for-the-time five-speed gearbox. It was highly regarded for its sharp handling and four-wheel disc brakes, offering performance that rivalled contemporary Alfa Romeos at a lower price point. While over 600,000 were built in Italy, survival rates are low due to severe corrosion issues, making well-preserved examples a rare find today.
