About the Dodge Lancer
Introduced for the 1961 model year, the Dodge Lancer was a badge-engineered sibling to the Plymouth Valiant, designed to give Dodge dealers a competitor in the burgeoning compact segment. It was distinguished by its unique 'split' grille, round taillights, and more luxurious interior appointments compared to the Valiant. Under the hood sat the legendary Slant-6 engine, tilted at 30 degrees to allow for a lower bonnet line and easier maintenance. While it offered a comfortable ride and nimble handling for its era, the Lancer struggled to find its footing against rivals like the Ford Falcon and was replaced by the Dart after just two years.
