About the Plymouth Superbird
Developed to dominate NASCAR's superspeedways, the Superbird was a radical aerodynamic evolution of the Plymouth Road Runner. Its most striking features—a 19-inch nose cone and a towering 24-inch rear wing—were designed to provide stability and downforce at speeds exceeding 200 mph. While the 426 Hemi was the racing flagship, the 440 Super Commando offered more tractable street performance for the 1,935 units required by homologation rules. Its extreme styling was initially polarizing, leading many to sit unsold in 1970, but it has since become one of the most iconic and valuable symbols of the muscle car era.

Plymouth Superbird fun facts
- The Superbird's signature 'Beep-Beep' horn was officially licensed from Warner Bros. to mimic the Road Runner cartoon character.
- The rear wing was so tall not just for aerodynamics, but to allow the boot lid to open fully without hitting the spoiler.
- NASCAR's 1971 rule changes effectively banned 'aero cars' by limiting their engine displacement to 305 cubic inches, ending the Superbird's career after one year.
