About the Mercury Cougar
The 1969 Mercury Cougar XR-7 represented the peak of the model's first generation, offering a more refined 'pony car' experience than its Ford Mustang stablemate. The XR-7 trim was the luxury flagship, distinguished by a wood-grained dashboard, toggle switches, and leather-bolstered upholstery inspired by British grand tourers. While it shared the Mustang's chassis, the Cougar featured a three-inch longer wheelbase and a unique 'electric shaver' grille with hidden headlights. The 1969 model year introduced a significant facelift with a more pronounced 'coke bottle' profile and the first-ever convertible body style for the nameplate.
