About the Mercury Cougar
The 1977 model year marked a radical transformation for the Mercury Cougar, as it moved from the Mustang-based pony car segment to the intermediate Ford Torino platform. This fourth-generation model absorbed the Mercury Montego line, expanding the nameplate to include sedans and wagons, though the two-door personal luxury coupe remained the definitive choice. While the performance-oriented 'Eliminator' days were gone, the 1977 Cougar focused on the 'Brougham' era of plush interiors, opera windows, and a smooth, isolated ride. It was a massive commercial success, with the XR-7 trim alone accounting for nearly two-thirds of production, solidifying the Cougar as Mercury's flagship luxury icon of the late 1970s.
