About the Mercury Cougar
The 1980 Mercury Cougar marked a radical departure for the nameplate, shifting from the heavy intermediate chassis to the lighter, more efficient Ford Fox platform. This fifth-generation model was significantly downsized, shedding nearly 400 kg and 15 inches in length compared to its predecessor. Despite the smaller footprint, it retained the 'personal luxury' ethos with plush velour interiors, landau roofs, and the signature XR-7 styling. The 5.0-litre Windsor V8, while choked by early emissions equipment, provided smooth, quiet cruising rather than the muscle car performance of earlier decades.
