About the Mercedes-Benz S-Class W116
The W116 generation was the first to be officially designated as the 'S-Class', setting a new global benchmark for luxury and safety. The 280 S served as the entry-level variant, powered by the M110 dual-overhead-cam straight-six engine using a Solex carburettor. It introduced pioneering safety features such as a reinforced passenger cell, a fuel tank positioned above the rear axle for crash protection, and later, the first production ABS system. While less powerful than the V8 models, the 280 S is appreciated by collectors for its robust build quality and relatively simpler mechanicals.
