About the Mazda E-Series SK

The fourth-generation Bongo, built on Mazda's SK platform from June 1999 until 2020, was a heavy rework of the previous SS/SE van with a completely new front end, and was sold in export markets as the E-series. Australia took the E1800 short-wheelbase van from December 2002 to July 2006 and New Zealand kept it until 2011, alongside the wider Bongo Brawny badged E2000. The E1800 has a 1789 cc F8 SOHC petrol four with fuel injection, rated at 67 kW and 138 Nm, driving the rear wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox. It seats three in a cab-over layout on a 2220 mm wheelbase and weighs 1285 kg at the kerb. Japanese buyers could also choose diesel engines, four-wheel drive, an automatic or a truck body, and it was the last Bongo generation that Mazda designed itself.

Mazda E-Series SK fun facts

  • Mazda claimed the two-wheel-drive van's 4.3 m minimum turning radius was the smallest in its class when the SK-platform Bongo went on sale in Japan in June 1999.
  • Mazda's March 2012 decision to stop developing commercial vehicles made the SK its last in-house Bongo; since 2020 the Bongo has been a rebadged Daihatsu Gran Max.
  • In 2019 Mazda sold only 11,267 Bongos, about one-sixth of its 2005 total, shortly before it ended its own production of the van in 2020.
