About the Mazda 323 GT-R BG
The Mazda 323 GT-R (known as the Familia GT-R in Japan) was a purpose-built homologation special created to qualify Mazda for Group A WRC competition. Distinguished from the lesser GTX by its aggressive three-slot front bumper, bonnet vents, and flared arches, it featured a significantly strengthened 'BPD' engine with a larger IHI turbocharger and sodium-filled valves. While the Japanese-market version produced 210 PS, European export models were restricted to 185 PS due to catalytic converters. Despite its mechanical prowess and sophisticated AWD system, Mazda withdrew factory support from rallying shortly after its launch, leaving the GT-R as a rare, underrated cult icon of the 1990s JDM era.
