About the Mazda 121 DB
The second-generation Mazda 121, known internally as the DB series, is famously nicknamed the 'Bubble' due to its rounded, upright styling. Eschewing the boxy hatchback trend of the early 1990s, Mazda designed it as a compact four-door saloon with a high roofline to maximise headroom and visibility. The 1.3 GSX was a popular trim in the UK, often featuring a full-length electric canvas 'Sun Top' that effectively turned the car into a semi-convertible. While its appearance was polarising, it was praised for its mechanical reliability and surprisingly agile handling thanks to its low kerb weight.
