About the Citroën AX
Launched in 1986 to replace the Visa, the Citroën AX was a masterclass in weight reduction and aerodynamic efficiency. By using plastic body panels and varying steel thicknesses, Citroën achieved a kerb weight as low as 640kg for base models, resulting in exceptional fuel economy and surprising agility. The 1.1-litre variant, particularly the post-1991 facelift models with fuel injection, offered a perfect balance of urban utility and low running costs. While it lacked the refinement of its Peugeot 106 sibling, its 'less is more' philosophy made it a cult favourite among enthusiasts of minimalist engineering.
