About the Maserati 5000 GT

Commissioned by the Shah of Iran, the 5000 GT was Maserati's ultimate flagship, combining a reinforced 3500 GT chassis with a detuned version of the 450S sports racer's V8 engine. The first two examples, including the Shah's 'Scià di Persia', featured gear-driven camshafts and Weber carburettors before the model transitioned to a more refined fuel-injected setup. With bespoke coachwork from eight different Italian carrozzerie, most notably Allemano and Touring, it was one of the most exclusive and expensive cars of its era. Its ownership roster was a global who's who, including Gianni Agnelli, the Aga Khan, and Briggs Cunningham.

Maserati 5000 GT fun facts

  • The first car built for the Shah of Iran featured gold-plated interior switches and knobs to match its royal status.
  • Maserati only produced 34 chassis, and because each was coach-built to order, no two examples are exactly identical.
