About the Maserati Khamsin
The Khamsin was Maserati's flagship grand tourer of the 1970s, designed by Marcello Gandini at Bertone to replace the Ghibli. It is notable for its extensive use of Citroën's high-pressure hydraulics, which power the steering, brakes, clutch, and even the pop-up headlights. The front-mid-mounted V8 provides effortless torque, while the glass rear tail panel remains one of its most distinctive design features. Despite its technical sophistication and striking looks, production remained low due to the 1973 oil crisis.

Maserati Khamsin fun facts
- The Khamsin features a unique transparent rear panel between the tail lights, which improved rear visibility and became a signature Gandini design element.
- It was the first front-engined Maserati to feature independent rear suspension, a significant upgrade over the live axle used in the preceding Ghibli.
- The DIRAVI speed-sensitive power steering was borrowed from the Citroën SM, offering a self-centring action that was highly unusual for a sports car of the era.
