About the Land Rover Discovery Series I
Launched in 1989 to bridge the gap between the utilitarian Defender and the luxury Range Rover, the Discovery Series I utilized the Range Rover's 100-inch chassis and coil-spring suspension to offer superior off-road capability with improved road manners. The 200Tdi engine was a landmark for Land Rover, introducing direct injection and intercooling to provide the efficiency and torque required for a daily-driver 4x4. Its distinctive stepped roof and Conran-designed interior, featuring a 'Sonar Blue' colour scheme and clever storage solutions, made it an instant success. While prone to corrosion in the sills and boot floor, well-preserved early examples are now highly sought after by collectors for their purity of design and mechanical simplicity.

Land Rover Discovery Series I fun facts
- The interior was designed by Sir Terence Conran's agency and originally featured a unique 'Sonar Blue' fabric that has become a hallmark of early models.
- To save development costs, the Discovery borrowed many parts from the Rover Group bin, including Morris Marina door handles and Austin Montego rear light clusters.
- The 200Tdi engine was so successful in the Discovery that it was later detuned and fitted to the Defender to replace its aging naturally aspirated and turbodiesel units.
