About the Lada Kalina
The Lada Kalina (VAZ-1118/1119) represented a significant shift for AvtoVAZ, moving away from the boxy, Fiat-derived designs of the Soviet era toward a more contemporary, rounded aesthetic. Development began in the early 1990s but was delayed by financial instability, finally reaching production in late 2004. While it offered improved ergonomics and safety over the Samara, it remained a budget-focused vehicle primarily for the Russian and Eastern European markets. The 1.6-litre 8-valve engine is noted for its simplicity and ease of repair rather than performance.

Lada Kalina fun facts
- Vladimir Putin famously promoted the Kalina in 2010 by driving a bright yellow 'Sport' version 2,000 kilometres across the Amur Highway.
- The Kalina was one of the first Lada models to be designed using computer-aided design (CAD) technology.
- In certain export markets like Finland, the car was sold as the Lada 119 because 'Kalina' has unfavorable linguistic connotations in some languages.
