About the Lada 1200
The Lada 1200, known internally as the VAZ-2101, was the result of a massive industrial collaboration between the Soviet Union and Fiat. Based on the Fiat 124, it was extensively re-engineered with thicker steel, raised suspension, and an overhead-cam engine to survive the harsh Russian climate and poor road conditions. While basic and unrefined by Western standards, its simplicity and durability made it a global success, exported to over 80 countries. Today, it is a cult classic, valued for its historical significance as the car that put the Soviet Union on wheels.

Lada 1200 fun facts
- Over 800 changes were made to the original Fiat 124 design to make it suitable for Soviet roads, including the addition of a manual starting handle.
- The VAZ-2101 was named 'Zhiguli' in the Soviet Union, but the name was changed to 'Lada' for export markets because 'Zhiguli' sounded too much like the word 'gigolo' in several languages.
- The 1.2-litre engine featured an overhead camshaft, which was actually more advanced than the pushrod engine found in the original Fiat 124.
