About the Lada 1500
Known domestically as the VAZ-2103 and nicknamed the 'Troika', the Lada 1500 was the prestigious, upmarket sibling to the original 2101. Developed in collaboration with Fiat and based on the 124 Special, it featured a more powerful 1.5-litre overhead-cam engine and a significantly plusher interior with wood-effect trim and a full suite of gauges. To survive Soviet conditions, it was engineered with a reinforced chassis, raised ground clearance, and heavy-duty suspension, making it famously robust. While once a common sight across Eastern Europe and the UK, well-preserved examples are now sought-after collectors' items for their charming Italian-Soviet fusion and rugged simplicity.

Lada 1500 fun facts
- The VAZ-2103 was so popular and expensive to produce that it was the first Lada model to be discontinued, despite not being the oldest in the range.
- Early production models in 1972 used the interior from the basic VAZ-2101 because the factory was not yet ready to produce the new 'luxury' cabin parts.
- The car's distinctive quad-headlight front end and extensive chrome trim were designed to distinguish it as a status symbol for Soviet white-collar workers.
