About the Mitsubishi Colt A150
The A150-generation Mitsubishi Colt, known as the Mirage in Japan, was a pioneer for the brand as its first front-wheel-drive model. The 1.4 GLX trim is most famous for its 'Super Shift' transmission, which utilised a two-speed transfer case to provide eight forward ratios across 'Power' and 'Economy' modes. This technical curiosity allowed the small hatchback to balance punchy urban acceleration with relaxed motorway cruising. Today, it is a rare survivor of the early-80s Japanese car boom, valued by collectors for its unique engineering and clean, angular styling.

Mitsubishi Colt A150 fun facts
- The 'Super Shift' gearbox was born out of necessity; because the transmission sat below the engine, an extra idler shaft was needed to correct rotation, which engineers then turned into a two-speed range selector.
- In the UK, the Colt was marketed under the 'Colt' brand name rather than Mitsubishi until the mid-1980s.
- The A150 Colt was also sold in North America as the Dodge Colt and Plymouth Champ through a partnership with Chrysler.
