About the Wartburg 353

The Wartburg 353 W (Weiterentwicklung) was the refined successor to the original 353, produced by AWE in Eisenach. It is defined by its simple three-cylinder two-stroke engine, which features only seven major moving parts, earning it a reputation for being as easy to maintain as a motorcycle. Despite its utilitarian East German origins, the 353 W featured a modern coil-sprung suspension and front disc brakes, offering a surprisingly smooth ride compared to its contemporary, the Trabant. It remains a cult classic for its distinctive exhaust note, 'freewheel' transmission, and boxy, functional design.

Wartburg 353 fun facts

  • The 353 W features a 'freewheel' mechanism that allows the car to coast without engine braking, protecting the two-stroke engine from oil starvation during deceleration.
  • Known as the 'Wartburg Knight' in the UK, it was one of the few Eastern Bloc cars to find a dedicated export market in Western Europe before emissions laws tightened.
  • The engine was so simple that owners often joked they were 'driving a car but maintaining a motorcycle.'
