About the Jaguar XJR X308
The X308-generation XJR was the first XJ to feature V8 power, replacing the straight-six X300. Its AJ-V8 engine is paired with an Eaton M112 supercharger and a Mercedes-sourced W5A580 gearbox, creating a refined yet devastatingly fast executive express. While it retained the classic, low-slung silhouette of earlier XJs, the XJR added a mesh grille, larger 'Penta' or 'Asteroid' wheels, and a firmer CATS adaptive suspension. Collectors prize the X308 for its blend of traditional British luxury and modern performance, though early Nikasil-lined engines and plastic timing chain tensioners are known maintenance points.

Jaguar XJR X308 fun facts
- The XJR used a heavy-duty 5-speed automatic transmission sourced from Mercedes-Benz because Jaguar's own ZF units could not handle the V8's high torque.
- Early 4.0-litre AJ-V8 engines used Nikasil bore linings which could fail when exposed to high-sulphur fuel, leading Jaguar to replace many engines under warranty.
- Despite its performance, the XJR was designed to be a 'sleeper', with only subtle cues like the wire mesh grille and larger exhaust tips distinguishing it from the standard XJ8.
