About the Honda Element

The Honda Element was a bold departure from traditional SUV design, featuring a distinctively boxy shape and rear-hinged 'side cargo' doors that created a massive pillarless opening. Built on a modified CR-V platform, it was marketed towards outdoor enthusiasts with a wipe-clean urethane floor and highly flexible seating that could fold flat into a bed or be removed entirely. While its quirky aesthetics were polarising at launch, it has developed a significant cult following for its immense practicality and Honda reliability. The 2.4-litre i-VTEC engine provides adequate power, though the car's aerodynamics prioritise interior volume over high-speed refinement.

Honda Element fun facts

  • The interior was designed to be easily cleaned, featuring waterproof seat fabric and a floor made of TPO-coated textured plastic rather than carpet.
  • The rear 'clamshell' doors cannot be opened unless the front doors are already open, as the front seatbelts are integrated into the rear doors.
  • Despite being marketed to young 'active' buyers, the Element became unexpectedly popular with senior citizens and dog owners due to its low step-in height and spacious cabin.
