About the Volkswagen Derby Mk1

Launched in 1977, the Volkswagen Derby was the notchback saloon sibling to the Mk1 Polo, designed to offer a more traditional three-box silhouette for European buyers. The 1.3 GLS was the range-topping variant, featuring the largest available engine and enhanced interior appointments like a clock and cigarette lighter. Despite its diminutive size, the Derby was famous for its cavernous 515-litre boot, which actually outsold the Polo hatchback in its first year of production. It remains a rare sight today, as many were overlooked in favour of the more iconic Golf and Polo hatchbacks, making well-preserved examples a curiosity for VW enthusiasts.
