About the Ford Zephyr Mk4
The Mark IV Zephyr was the final generation of Ford of Britain's flagship executive line, notable for its massive 'aircraft carrier' bonnet and short rear deck. It introduced a sophisticated all-independent coil spring suspension and four-wheel disc brakes, though early models were criticised for wayward handling and heavy steering. The 2.5-litre Essex V6 provided a smoother alternative to the entry-level V4, though it still struggled to move the car's significant bulk with urgency. Today, it is remembered as a bold, if flawed, attempt to blend American styling with British engineering before the arrival of the pan-European Granada.

Ford Zephyr Mk4 fun facts
- To maintain the long-bonnet aesthetic while using compact V-engines, Ford engineers mounted the spare wheel in front of the radiator.
- The steering was notoriously heavy, requiring 5.5 turns lock-to-lock on early cars, which was later increased to 6.4 turns to reduce effort.
- The Zephyr Mk4 was the last large Ford to be designed independently by Ford of Britain before operations merged with Ford of Germany.
