About the Pontiac Tempest
The first-generation Pontiac Tempest was a technological tour de force led by John DeLorean, featuring a front-mounted engine and a rear-mounted transaxle for near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution. Its 'Trophy 4' engine was essentially a 389-cubic-inch V8 sliced in half, canted at a 45-degree angle to fit the compact engine bay. The most distinctive feature was the 'rope-drive' flexible driveshaft, a thin steel bar that curved downward to eliminate the transmission hump and lower the car's centre of gravity. While innovative, the swing-axle rear suspension and four-cylinder vibrations made for a unique, if sometimes unrefined, driving experience compared to its GM Y-body siblings.

Pontiac Tempest fun facts
- The Tempest's flexible driveshaft was only 5/8 of an inch thick and was designed to bow downwards to provide a flat interior floor.
- It was the first American production car to feature a front-engine, rear-transaxle layout with four-wheel independent suspension.
- The 'Trophy 4' engine was so large for a four-cylinder that it required massive rubber engine mounts to dampen its significant vibrations.
