About the Ford Mustang
Launched just as the 1973 oil crisis hit, the Mustang II was a radical departure from the 'bloated' first-generation models, sharing its platform with the subcompact Ford Pinto. While enthusiasts initially decried the lack of a V8 in its debut year, the Mustang II was a massive commercial success, selling nearly 400,000 units in 1974 alone and winning Motor Trend's Car of the Year. The 2.8-litre Cologne V6 was the top engine choice for 1974, offering a balance of European-derived refinement and improved fuel economy. Today, it is appreciated as the car that saved the Mustang nameplate from extinction during a period of intense economic pressure.

Ford Mustang fun facts
- The Mustang II was the first American car to feature power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering as standard.
- Despite its smaller size, the 1974 Mustang II was actually heavier than the original 1964.5 model due to new safety bumpers and emissions equipment.
- Lee Iacocca, the 'father of the Mustang', personally pushed for the downsizing to return the car to its 'little limousine' roots.
