About the Ford LTD
The 1979 Ford LTD marked a radical shift for Ford's flagship, introducing the long-running Panther platform to combat rising fuel prices and stricter emissions. Though 15 inches shorter and 800 lbs lighter than its predecessor, it maintained a spacious interior and the traditional soft American ride. The 5.0-litre Windsor V8 was the entry-level V8, prioritising smooth cruising and reliability over outright performance during the 'malaise era'. As the first of the downsized full-size Fords, it set the template for the Crown Victoria that would dominate American roads for the next three decades.

Ford LTD fun facts
- Despite being significantly smaller on the outside, the 1979 LTD actually offered more interior legroom and trunk space than the massive 1978 model it replaced.
- The 1979 model year was the only time the full-size LTD was sold alongside the larger, older-chassis LTD II, creating a confusing showroom where the 'big' car was smaller than the 'mid-size' one.
- This generation of LTD introduced the 'Panther' platform, which remained in production with only incremental changes until the final Crown Victoria rolled off the line in 2011.
