About the Ford LTD
The 1972 Ford LTD represented the peak of American full-size luxury for the Blue Oval, positioned above the Galaxie 500 as a more refined, quiet cruiser. For the 1972 model year, the 351 cubic-inch (5.8L) V8 became the standard engine, though power ratings appeared lower than previous years due to the industry-wide shift from SAE gross to net figures. This generation was known for its 'coke-bottle' styling and massive presence, offering a ride quality that rivalled contemporary Lincolns. As the final year before the introduction of federally mandated 5-mph bumpers, the 1972 model is often preferred by collectors for its cleaner, more integrated front-end design.
