About the Ford Corcel
The second-generation Ford Corcel, known as the Corcel II, debuted in late 1977 with a modern, straight-edged fastback design inspired by the European Ford Taunus and Granada. Despite its American-style aesthetics, it retained the front-wheel-drive underpinnings of the Renault 12, a legacy of Ford's acquisition of Willys-Overland do Brasil. The 1.6-litre engine introduced for 1980 provided a necessary power boost over the original 1.4, helping the car manage its increased weight. It remains a significant piece of Brazilian automotive history, representing a unique hybrid of French engineering and American branding.

Ford Corcel fun facts
- The Corcel was actually launched in Brazil nearly two years before the Renault 12, despite being based on the same 'Project M' engineering.
- To distinguish the 1.6-litre engine from the 1.4, Ford painted the valve covers and air filter housings gold.
- The Corcel II was the basis for the Ford Pampa, a popular small pick-up that eventually offered a rare four-wheel-drive system.
