About the Ford Consul Mk3
The Mk3 Consul was launched in 1972 as the entry-level counterpart to the more luxurious Ford Granada Mk1, effectively replacing the Zephyr 4. While the Granada featured chrome-heavy styling, the Consul was distinguished by its simpler cross-mesh grille and reduced brightwork, targeting the fleet and family markets. The 2.0 L trim initially used the Essex V4 engine but transitioned to the more refined overhead-cam 'Pinto' unit, providing dependable performance for a large saloon. It is remembered for its robust handling, thanks to all-independent suspension, and its frequent appearances as a police vehicle in 1970s British television dramas.

Ford Consul Mk3 fun facts
- The Consul name was dropped in late 1975 after Ford won a legal battle with the Granada Group, allowing all models to be rebranded as Granadas.
- Though the Consul was the 'budget' version, the Consul GT with the 3.0L V6 was actually faster than the equivalent Granada because it was significantly lighter.
- The Mk3 Consul and Granada were the first 'pan-European' Fords, developed jointly by Ford's British and German divisions.
