About the Ford Consul Mk2
The Ford Consul Mk2 was the four-cylinder entry point to the 'Three Graces' range, alongside the more powerful Zephyr and Zodiac. Styled under George Walker at Ford USA, it featured prominent tailfins and a wide chrome grille that mirrored the full-size American Fairlane of the era. It was a pioneer for Ford of Britain, utilising modern unitary construction and MacPherson strut front suspension, which provided a more sophisticated ride than many contemporary rivals. While the three-speed column-shift gearbox and vacuum-operated wipers were dated even for 1958, its robust 1.7-litre engine and spacious bench-seat interior made it a staple of British middle-class motoring.

Ford Consul Mk2 fun facts
- The Consul Mk2 was famously the car in which American rock and roll star Eddie Cochran was travelling when he died in a crash in Wiltshire in 1960.
- Despite its British roots, the Mk2's styling was so American that it was successfully exported back to the United States and Canada as a compact alternative to domestic Fords.
- The 'Lowline' revision in 1959 lowered the roof by 1.5 inches and introduced more modern stainless steel brightwork to keep the design fresh against newer competitors.
