About the Austin 1300 ADO16

The Austin 1300 was the definitive version of the ADO16 family, a range that dominated British sales charts for nearly a decade. Designed by Sir Alec Issigonis with styling by Pininfarina, it utilised a transverse engine and front-wheel drive to provide interior space that shamed much larger cars. Its defining technical feature was the Hydrolastic interconnected fluid suspension, which offered a remarkably composed and sophisticated ride for a small family saloon. While the 1100 was the original, the 1275cc '1300' engine introduced in 1967 provided the necessary power to make the car a capable long-distance cruiser. Today, it is a cherished classic, though survivors are rare due to the model's notorious susceptibility to corrosion.
