About the DKW F89
The DKW F89, marketed as the Meisterklasse, was the first passenger car produced by the re-established Auto Union in West Germany following World War II. It famously combined the pre-war F8's proven front-wheel-drive chassis and two-stroke twin engine with the advanced, aerodynamic steel bodywork originally intended for the unreleased F9 prototype. This 'hybrid' design achieved a remarkably low drag coefficient of 0.34, aiding its modest 23 hp engine in reaching a 100 km/h top speed. As a direct ancestor to the modern Audi brand, it is a significant piece of industrial history, prized by collectors for its unique engineering and role in Germany's economic recovery.

DKW F89 rarity in CarSpot
The DKW F89 is an Uncommon card in CarSpot, with a rarity score of 37 out of 100. Hot hatches and premium sporty cars. An Uncommon card is worth 20 XP.
Each model's tier starts from a 0–100 score based on its value plus its power or production numbers. Once enough players have spotted a model, how often it is spotted can move it up or down one tier. How CarSpot rarity works
Rarity is a collectible game mechanic, not an assessment of real-world scarcity or value.
DKW F89 fun facts
- The F89 used a 'thermosiphon' cooling system which relied on natural convection rather than a mechanical water pump.
- Its aerodynamic body was so efficient that it achieved a drag coefficient of 0.34, which was exceptional for a mass-market car in 1950.
- The gear selector is a 'Krückstockschaltung' (crutch-handle) lever mounted on the dashboard, a layout later made famous by the Citroën 2CV.
